Proxmox Homelab
What is Proxmox?
Proxmox is my hypervisor of choice for my homelab environment because it provides a powerful, open-source platform for virtualization and container management. With its intuitive web-based interface, integrated backup tools, and support for virtual machines as well as LXC containers, Proxmox enables efficient, flexible, and scalable workload deployment. Its enterprise-grade features such as clustering, high-availability configurations, PCIe passthrough support, and robust storage options allow me to experiment with real world infrastructure concepts and simulate a plethora of scenarios. Using Proxmox has strengthened my understanding of system administration, networking, virtualization technologies, and resource optimization.
Purpose of My Homelab
The purpose of my homelab is to create a flexible, controlled environment where I can develop and strengthen my skills in systems administration, virtualization, and modern infrastructure management. By building and maintaining a Proxmox based environment, I am able to simulate real-world scenarios, as well as run local services for myself (TailScale VPN, Jellyfin media server, Samba shares, and game servers for friends.) The hands on experience I gain from my Proxmox environment has already helped me in my current workplace, as I have been able to apply the troubleshooting and configuration experience I’ve gained to real-world scenarios.
Skills and Knowledge
The skills I have learned from maintaining this virtual environment have proven invaluable to me, as I have been able to apply what I have learned multiple times in real-world scenarios such as troubleshooting and machine configurations at my current workplace. I have been able to learn and practice many concepts, from virtualization, networking, storage management, and automation, all the way to security concepts.
Example of Experience
To example some of the experience I have with Proxmox and virtual environments, I’ve included a tutorial I recorded showing how to create a Windows 11 virtual machine in proxmox, as well as how to properly configure the virtual machine with VirtIO drivers for efficiency.
